Kate Stowers has been with the clinic for two years, having qualified 11 years’ ago, and is proud to treat a growing number of clients loyal to Blizard Physiotherapy’s successful methods reaping results.

Kate specialises in musculoskeletal physiotherapy and women’s health, areas of expertise she has been able to develop while also working for the NHS at the Nottingham University Hospitals.

She enjoys the cross-over in treatment methods with the two specialties, finding she can often help a patient with more complex problems more effectively as a result of the connected issues within both areas.

Kate has also joined Jenny Blizard in implementing research carried out linking mobility in the thoracic spine and reduced lung capacity in both athletes and non-athletes.

Both physiotherapists have seen improvements in runners’ lung capacities after mobilising their thoracic spine and rib cage, helping them to improve their breathing technique, and, as a result, their running times.

Kate is always motivated by the huge satisfaction she feels in helping patients achieve their goals, whether that be running and sports-related, or in their daily activities and hobbies.  She is also encouraged by the surge in people taking up running, and is keen to help people of all abilities to keep fit and enjoy the sport’s benefits by treating any niggles that may occur.

She added that she is constantly learning from the other team members at the clinic, and is looking forward to continue her learning in as many areas of physiotherapy as she can.

She explained: “One of the reasons I came to work at Blizard Physiotherapy was the variety and knowledge of the other clinicians.  We have all come from different backgrounds, so we are able to bounce ideas off each other and do joint assessments, which massively helps the patient's experience and also our own learning.

“Physiotherapy has always been the career I wanted to pursue for as long as I can remember and 11 years in I feel more enthusiastic about it than ever. I am about to embark on some Masters-based learning, and when I have time, I would consider taking a course in the Maitland Concept, a form of physiotherapy both Jenny and Caroline Hennigan use whenever relevant.

“Over the years I have done many other courses, particularly related to musculoskeletal physiotherapy and women's health, including kinetic control, muscle energy techniques, acupuncture, and specific joint-based therapy such as knee, shoulder, lower back and pelvis.  With physiotherapy, there is always more to learn, which is one of the reasons I enjoy it so much.”

Kate, who currently sees patients one evening a week as well as every Saturday morning, said she is happy to be able to apply her NHS experience at the clinic whenever relevant.

She said: “I really enjoy having the mixture of NHS and private work, and find clinically it gives me variety - both areas of my practice benefit from me doing both sectors. Certainly my experience working within the fracture and spinal clinic, Accident and Emergency, and treating many post-surgical patients, allows me to bring knowledge from my NHS background to the practice, therefore giving an added depth to the treatment we can offer at Blizard Physiotherapy.”
