Racing 5ks up to 100k with triathlons along the way, Team Blizard proved they are a force to be reckoned with across the UK!

Following on from the most successful marathon season EVER for Team Blizard, this weekend has seen yet more PBs, victories and gritty performances across every distance from the 5k at Milton Keynes to an astonishing 100k in Derbyshire!

Kicking off a glorious few days for Team Blizard on the roads of Brodsworth was elite athlete Fiona Davies, who ran her quickest 5 mile time by some margin this year when she clocked 29:44 to take victory in the women’s race. She fought off fierce competition from Totley’s Laura Allen, who holds a marathon PB of 2:52:34. Fiona said of the conditions at the latest edition of the South Yorkshire Road League: “It was freezing cold, and the last mile was extremely muddy!”

Also in action on Wednesday night was Askern's Kelly Raven, who ran a stormer, smashing her PB by more than two minutes with a superb 33:06, while Sheffield’s Rob Jones continued his valiant battle against injury when he clocked 32:47, one of his fastest ever 5 miles on the challenging course, with Doncaster’s Martin Hookway a mere six seconds behind in 32:53.

Martin normally prefers suffering over longer distances - we mean, he enjoys running for hours rather than minutes! - and that is exactly what he did when he took on the Lightning Run 12 Hour challenge, covering an incredible 100km on the multi-terrain course in preparation for the 24 hour Thunder Run in the summer..!

Continuing the endurance theme, elite Team Blizard triathlete Tom Morris had one of his strongest races at the Notts Varsity Tri, finishing second overall against some of the very best in the country.

Tom was elated with his performance, and gave an exciting insight into the run section of the triathlon: “My run is really strong after winter miles with the Blizard team, and I was reaping the rewards in yet another race. I caught up (to one of the very fast rivals), dug in to kick past and make it stick. I realised he could have set off 20 seconds after me, so I had to get past and put 20 seconds into him, the legs felt strong, so all I had left to do was to was keep up the pace. That I did, I put 30 seconds into him, and had the fastest run split of the day in a strong field.

“Overall I was really happy with the result, I had proven to myself that gains had been made, and not only that, I could more than hold my own in a competitive field.”

Meanwhile, fast improving fellow lactate-tested athlete, Eye’s Ben Heron, is enjoying his fine vein of form, winning the Langtoft 10k in a PB of 33:12 yesterday - we know that sub-33 is just around the corner Ben, keep training hard!

Over in Milton Keynes, Nene Valley Harriers’ Yvonne Scarrott, fresh from her impressive marathon PB in Manchester, ran her fastest 5k time in five years, while Eye’s Lee Whitton ran 92:41 in the town’s half marathon, just over a minute shy of his life time best, proving the power of marathon training, and promising great things for both Peterborough athletes’ races over the next few months!

Finally, at King's Lynn, Jenny Blizard's physiotherapy client and top veteran, Philippa Taylor, also from Nene Valley, showed her treatment is working wonders as she finished 6th overall in a huge SB of 37:02, while club mate and fellow Team Blizard athlete, Ruth Jones, deep in the middle of Man vs Horse training, ran her second fastest 10k for a year when she finished in 41:57, helping the club win the second ladies’ team prize!
