Triathlons, track races, half marathons and 10k's on all surfaces followed our first Super Mile of the summer on a gloriously sunny weekend!

Tom Morris Super Mile May 2016

Athletes from Team Blizard were out in force all over the country this weekend, with our first Super Mile event kicking off the action on Friday night ahead of track races, 10kms, half marathons and triathlons in the hottest conditions so far this year! **

The sun was out for our first Super Mile of the year on Friday evening, and we were over the moon to see a record number of competitors pitting their athletic wits on the super fast course at Normanby Hall. Setting off in waves specific to target mile times, eight races took place over the course of the evening, with warm conditions and the promise of cake at the end pushing countless numbers of you to score PBs a plenty!

Team Blizard elite’s Tom Morris was the overall victor on the night, winning the fastest wave by one second in 4:35 from Ben Sadowyj, with Luke Stonehewer (4:48) in third. Tom’s Team Blizard team mate continues his promising return from a knee injury with an encouraging 5 minute clocking, while one of Coach Frary’s star athletes, James Nottingham, excelled to run 5:15, Scunthorpe’s Simon Griffin also ran well to post a 5:21 time, not far ahead of Doncaster’s Warren Clarke’s 5:35, who is also returning from a long lay off.

The first two ladies finished within two seconds of each other in 5:51 and 5:53 respectively, with Mablethorpe’s Janine Stones and Cleethorpes’ Beverley Wilson taking the top honours, while Wolds Vets’ Helen Robinson was never far behind in third in 6:09.

Meanwhile, Jono’s top triathlete in training, Karen Lynch, ran out of her skin to clock 6:10, another step towards the next level of competition, and a very exciting result with just a few months left until her first ever Ironman!

LincsQuad were out in force once again, with the first three beating the six minute barrier, while Tony England ran strongly to clock 6:04, crossing the line at exactly the same time as Doncaster Tri’s Rich Morton.

Team Blizard ambassadors Emily Whall and Jess Barrington both looked the business in the Newline kit and On shoes, which helped them shoot to times of 6:31 and 6:30 - well done ladies!

Team Walk Jog Run’s Rebecca Urry ran the race of her life to smash her 9:05 PB from last September to clock a far quicker 8:33, while club mate Lyndsay O’Connor was also in the mood for beating life time best performances with a fantastic 10:24!

The most astonishing run of the day absolutely went to Wolds Vets' Mick Casey, who has to have run one of the fastest V70 mile times in the country this year, if not in some years! He shot to a stunning 6:14 clocking, proving how he has put his lactate threshold test results into action in style!

However, we will leave it to Askern’s Steve Barber to round up the day, as we feel his words perfectly sum up how many people felt about the event - thanks Steve!:

“I came back from the Super Mile with a 9 second PB of 5:31! Where do I start in describing these events, it was a fantastic atmosphere, brilliant organisation, and On shoes there too to try out. I went off in the show case last race, there were some outstanding runners, but felt I put in a good run, and in the end didn't let anyone down. Another good feature of the race was the markers every 400 metres, giving a really good measure of where you were and how you were progressing. Brilliant!”

Super Mile head organiser Jono Frary was in action himself less than 48 hours later when he competed in the prestigious English Triathlon Championships at St Neots, finishing a strong seventh in his age category. Despite not being pleased with his result, we feel the need to remind him that he is still a legend in our eyes, he is a GB triathlete to boot, and one below-par race does not define the athlete!

Jono still did an incredible job tackling the standard distance event - which sees competitors taking on a 1500m swim followed by a 40km bike finishing off with a 10km run! - in stifling heat in Cambridgeshire, with the temperature gauge hitting 27 degrees in the east of the country yesterday!

Back up north, Retford’s Dave Corbett put in a top performance at the Leeds half marathon, defeating 98 percent of the field when he crossed the line in 88:11!
The lactate tested athlete said: “I am really pleased with my heart rate discipline in the race, finishing in the top two percent of 6,300 athletes. If you've not done it yet, I would definitely recommend getting booked in for a lactate threshold test with Dave Tune!”

On Saturday, Team Blizard elite’s Fiona Davies was in her usual excellent form at the Northern League 3000m in Doncaster’s athletics stadium, running a speedy 10:42 despite not having done any proper speed work since January!

Describing the event and her new racing kit from Newline and On Running she said: “Conditions were lovely, with a breeze down the home straight. It was the first time I have worn the Newline shorts - I chose a size which gave light compression, having never worn that style before, and they were very comfortable for racing.

“For anyone who feels a bit self-conscious wearing tight lycra, these are very flattering, and although they are very made from very thin material, they offer just the right amount of support. I also love my On Clouds - they are great for any distance, and I have now worn mine for the marathon, the South Yorkshire Road League at Brodsworth, and the 3000m track race!”

Meanwhile, earlier in the week, Barnsley’s fast improving Dan Kestrel won the Wombwell 10km in a superb 32:17, running the whole race in his threshold zone!

Dan has kindly contributed his own race report, which shows he is well and truly over the disappointment of having to pull out of the Manchester marathon, and looking ahead with great confidence and positivity.

He said: “My goal for this race was to run it as a hard threshold run, which meant keeping my heart rate between 160-168bpm, and see what pace that would led to. I knew the running would be hard with Jason Cherriman of Leeds City in the race, but I just had to focus on my HR to achieve what I wanted out of the race.

“This led me to run 32.17, which I was very pleased with for just a threshold effort, and a good sign that I am still in 2:22 marathon shape. This was also the race debut of my Newline shades from the Blizard shop, which felt amazing and light, and didn't move an inch during the race.

“My thanks go out to Dave and Jen at the clinic, and remember, #lactatetestingpaysoff!”

Another one of Coach Tune’s elite athletes, Wolverhampton & Bilston’s Phil Nicholls, clocked a ’back in the game’ 30:42 to win the Market Drayton 10k on Sunday. The former GB runner’s return to form is great to see - everyone wants to see you pulling on that GB vest again Phil, keep it up!

Finally, in sheering heat, Eye’s Ben Heron dealt with the conditions better than most to finish second in his club’s 10km race in 34:27, just three seconds shy of first place!

Another weekend of superb standout performances from all of you Team Blizard!
