The Blizard 5k time trial is becoming THE event to target for a PB over the distance!

Our latest On Running 5km Blizard’s time trial featured a plethora of determined, gritty runs from scores of ever-speedier Team Blizard athletes, with PBs and impressive runs all round, while Ian Micklethwaite joined many others in putting in gutsy performances at the Leeds triathlon!

Worksop’s Tim Doughty stormed to the finish line in a superb 17:23, just 10 seconds shy of his lifetime best recorded four years ago, and just holding off Sheffield’s Brian Rose by one second was Doncaster’s Dave Sedgwick with 17:38, which represented his first run over the notoriously eyeballs out distance since last July, while Brian’s 17:39 was not far off an outright PB!

Fourth place was snapped up by Team Blizard elite’s Mike Chadwick, who is still valiantly churning out the hard miles on his way back from a significant knee injury. His 17:39 was a strong threshold effort, while Scarborough’s Andrew Fleming was never far behind in an impressive 17:50.

Ever popular lactate threshold success story, Chris Pye, showed he is well on his way to returning to his best ever form with a very encouraging 18:45 clocking, with club mate and V40 James Smith also proving his training is getting him back into the sort of speed that challenges athletes half his age with a strong 19:08 result.

First lady across the line was coached athlete and one of Team Blizard’s most determined and focussed female runners, Jo Goodier, who appears to have put her recent injury woes behind her with a fine 19:18, while Team Blizard ambassador Emily Whall put in a typically gutsy performance to finish second in 22 minutes exactly.

One of the performances of the day, however, went to the incredibly positive GB age group duathlete and Jono Frary-coached athlete, Katie Webster, who smashed her previous 23:15 PB by over a minute with a fantastic 22:02 to finish just behind Emily!

Also showing their competitive mettle is still strong were Steve Mcleavy (20:33), Paul Cook (20:50), and Richard Morton (21:21), and it was great to see triathlete Andrew Kitchen making a return to the Blizard 5k with a well-deserved 21:25 result.

Russ Walker showed great feats of endurance and strength when he ran 21:46, just days after completing a mammoth 100 mile bike challenge, and Janet Hindley (22:20), Adele Bryan (24:30) and Lindsey Flemming (25:04) also proved that hard work pays off with times to be proud of!

Finally, the always impressive Ian Micklethwaite took on the challenge of the Leeds Standard Distance Triathlon in his characteristically determined fashion. Completing the standard distance in a strong time, he said he was happy with his outing off limited training, adding: "To race on the same streets that have been my beat area for numerous years was something special!" With too many to mention taking on this popular event, suffice to say you are all putting the #lactatetrainingpaysoff hashtag into action in style!
