Ferriby's endless hills failed to quash Team Blizard's spirits as PBs aplenty were recorded in Hull

Article text
Hills, hills and more hills were the order of the day at the popular Ferriby 10m road race yesterday, where scores of Team Blizard athletes put in gutsy performances on the famously challenging course.

Highlights included brand new sparkling PBs for Danum’s Paula Davies, Askern’s Kelly Raven and Gainsborough’s Glen Peniston, course PBs for York’s Sarah Attwood, and an incredible lifetime best for Gainsborough’s Hanna Bennett, whose last outing on a properly measured 10m course was 15 minutes slower than her result yesterday!

Paula continues to shine in the light of her smarter training schedule following her lactate threshold test at the clinic last summer, and knocked a massive 8 minutes off her previous 10m PB from Askern last year to finish in 80:25.

Her description of the course summed up just how tough it was, so for her to run her fastest ever time for the distance was quite something!

She said: “I am chuffed, as Ferriby was really hilly for the first 5 miles, then there was that killer hill at the finish!”

Our own Liz Jackson ran a storming 80 minutes dead to finish just ahead of Paula, proving her endurance is going from strength to strength, while Askern’s Kelly Raven also ran a huge 8 minute PB of 71:11 to finish first in her V35 age category!

Gainsborough’s Glen Peniston’s 10m lifetime best of 80:23 may have been smaller than Kelly and Paula’s, but he has only recently returned to full training, and, on the advice of Coach Tune, ran the perfect negative split race - nice work Glen!

Scunthorpe’s Simon Griffin, the winner of our last Blizard and Curly’s Adventure race, ran a superb 59:27 to finish third in his V45 age category, while his club mate and lactate threshold athlete, Carlo Catalano, also ran well to cross the line in 71:22.

Doncaster’s Martin James and Chris Pye ran gutsy races to record times of 62:12 and 65:15, while popular Lincsquad’s Nicky Robinson made her 1:35.15 clocking look easy!

York’s Sarah Attwood finished fourth lady in 70:26 to obliterate her best time for the course by nearly there minutes, and Askern’s ultra-running legend, Sally Wheelhouse, ran a superb 83:27 to finish in the top 10 for her age group.

Gainsborough’s Hanna Bennett, however, ran the race of the day, knocking a massive 15 minutes off her last full distance 10m result with a fantastic 82:57, while club mate and yoga expert, Angela Boyle, put in an excellent 81:29 performance.

All in all, Team Blizard came to Hull’s Ferriby 10m race, they saw the hills, and they conquered them in style!

Lactate training really does pay off, so keep putting in the threshold runs and PBs will be yours!
