Marathon runner smashes his PB on lactate threshold training

Article text
Gainsborough & Morton AC’s Glenn Peniston smashed his best ever time at the 2015 Rock ’n’ Roll marathon in Liverpool, knocking 15 minutes off his PB set at last year’s Edinburgh Festival of Running.

The V40 ran a fantastic 4:22:50 in Liverpool two weeks ago, off the back of PB’s across the board from the beginning of the year, starting with an 81:10 clocking at the Ferriby 10m and a 1:47:02 result at last month’s North Lincs Half.

These impressive figures tell the whole story of how those who come to the clinic for a lactate threshold test and have their heart rate zones set for their future training can shatter their old race times, work towards fulfilling their potential, maximising their time available for running, as well as learning about how the peripheral parts of any training programme, such as sleep, diet, rest and recovery, and stress levels, all play a part in the end product of performance.

Dave says: “I have seen huge improvements in the way Glenn approaches his training and mental strategies. Having the lactate tests and setting his heart rate zones have helped him believe in himself, change his habits and, as a result, run massive PB’s.”

Glenn, or ‘Pidge’ as many of his friends call him, is full of praise for Dave, enthusing: “ He is a top bloke, he’s always available to answer questions and give advice, and he doesn't ‘sugar coat’ things, which is something I really appreciate.”

The fast-improving runner had Blizard Physiotherapy’s lactate test service recommended to him by a number of people, including club mate Kevin Housham, who has also benefitted hugely from Dave’s help.

Glenn had his first lactate test last summer, which highlighted the fact that he wasn’t running anywhere near his potential.

As anyone who’s used the service will know, there are many different elements to the two hour appointment aside from the treadmill session, including an overview of an athlete’s nutrition, hydration, weight, fat percentage, flexibility and overall lifestyle habits, all of which represents huge value for money.

As a result, one of the key facts Glenn discovered was that he was drinking too much coffee but not enough hydrating fluids, such as water, essential elements to consider for any athlete.

He was initially set a training schedule building three purposeful runs into his working week, which helped him fit his training in successfully around his other sporting commitments, but he saw even greater improvements in his performance after his re-test in November, when his training was increased in quantity and intensity.

Another advantage of having the re-test was that Dave was able to identify the fact that his haemoglobin levels were low, and, after taking some supplements and training even smarter over the intervening months, those levels had improved significantly at his latest re-test earlier this month.

Glenn is now full of confidence for his future racing potential, and is aiming to go even faster over the 10k and half marathon distance later in the year.

“I really appreciate having a structure to my training programme, and, with Dave’s help, I now enjoy my running a lot more”, he added.
