Triathlete James Nottingham has taken chunks off his swim times under Coach Jono Frary's guidance

Today we meet one of Jono Frary and Dave Tune’s athletes, Doncaster Triathlon Club’s James Nottingham, whose running and swimming have benefitted hugely from having a swimming analysis session and coaching from Jono, and a lactate threshold test with Dave.

23-year-old James, who is based in Doncaster, has made massive leaps in fitness and speed in just a matter of months, and here we find out how he has managed to achieve so much.

Blizard Physiotherapy: “James, you first visited us back in March for a lactate test with Dave, how has that worked out for you regards to your training and racing?”

James: “As a result of the lactate test, I now run to heart rate, and this has led to me shaving nearly three minutes off my 5km PB!

“At the beginning of the year, my best time for the distance was 20:30, but just four months after my lactate test I ran 17:38 at the Doncaster 5km in July!

Blizard Physiotherapy: “That’s great news! As you are a triathlete, these improvements must have helped you move up the finishing positions in races?”

James: “Yes absolutely. I have managed to win five age group categories this year since training with Dave, Jono, and Doncaster triathlon club, so 2015 has been awesome for me!”

Blizard Physiotherapy: “After your lactate threshold test, you then had a swimming analysis with Jono Frary, how did that go and what improvements have you made as a result?”

James: “The swim analysis was brilliant, and I enjoyed it more than I expected. Jono was very thorough with my weak points, so now I'm concentrating on my technique a lot more, as my stroke is quite poor.

“However, the improvements I’ve made are amazing. Considering I’ve only been able to swim front crawl since February this year, I have taken my 400m swim time down from 8:30 to 6:50!”

Blizard Physiotherapy: “Well done James! Now you’re coached by Jono, how have you found his one-to-one service, and what are your aims working with Coach Frary moving forwards?”

James: “The communication with Jono is excellent. If I have any problems I will ring him, or I see him every Tuesday at the Rossington swim session, where he coaches us all.

“I'm hoping that my times will continue to improve as I stick to the training programme Jono has given me.

“My goal for next year is to qualify for the GB age group team, so I can go along with Tom Morris, Jono, and Tom Bunkle to compete abroad! I would absolutely recommend the swim analysis and lactate threshold testing services, and have been telling friends at work and the triathlon club how good they are!”
