Peter Burkill here. I live on Dartmoor with my wife and two Springer Spaniels. Dartmoor is one of England's largest National Parks and is the wildest area of open moorland in the south of the country.

Background: My professional training is as a biologist and am an Emeritus Professor at the University of Plymouth. My photographic interests stretch back some 50 years and during this time it is fascinating to consider how photography has changed. Decades ago, I recall the excitement of watching images appear in the developing tray in the dim red light of a darkroom; it seemed like alchemy. Since retiring recently, I now spend more time photographing, exploring and demonstrating the beauty of the living natural world. My main interest is birds but I photograph any aspect of the natural environment. I enjoy lecturing - reflect on my professional training - and relish sharing my views on the natural world. To me, I enjoy both the beauty of the living things but I also find that photography allows me to reflect on the adaptation, the behaviour, the ecology and the evolution of the natural world. It is "art meets science" and working across this interface that gives me a huge buzz!

Technical stuff: My photography is Nikon based and I was elected to Nikon Professional Services in 2022. I have also moved to Nikon's Z format and my main camera is a now the Z9 with back-up from the Z7II and the Z6. I have Z lenses from 14 mm to 800mm. I am in the process of selling off my F mount bodies and lenses - see next section. Please contact me if you are interested. My images are mounted on a Drobo RAID system and I process them using DxO Optics Pro and Lightroom on an Apple Mac platform. I print using a Canon MG7150 printer. For exhibitions I use Whitewall prints.

Travel: Although I live in a beautiful part of the UK, I grew up in the Far East and have travelled all my life, both professionally and for pleasure. My Gallery photographs reflect countries I have visited. I will soon update my website with photos from a visit to Madagascar in late 2018 and then, at some stage, I will mount photos taken in Antarctica when I have digitised the 35mm sides that I took - so, do call back and check this website which will certainly evolve with time.

Although birds are my prime interest, in 2022 I am now working on pine martens and soon on polar bears
